I wish I could have spelt it with a V! It came about thus. I never heard much of Rolfe’s dealings with Stanhope Sprigge, but I understood he had a manuscript to ‘place’ which got mislaid. In the course of time Rolfe asked me to send him a statement of the various small sums of money I had advanced him, or expended on his behalf. After I had done this, I received a postcard from him written in green ink which conluded thus: ‘When the manuscript which was purloined by your accomplice Sprigge has been returned to me, it will be time enough for me to consider the settling of your bill.’! ! !
